With Her Cataracts Gone, Young Sara Sees like a Hawk!

Sarah, Cataract Surgery Odyssey Lens Patient

Managing YouTube gamers on social media is a fast-paced job, and it is imperative to be able to know what you are doing. Observing her surroundings as well as she used to become increasingly tricky for Sarah Boisselle as her cataracts developed.

Ten years passed since she first noticed her vision slipping, and it just became worse and worse. Her optometrist found that she had cataracts, even though she was just 39 years old — which is more than ten years younger than when cataracts usually appear in patients.

Sarah's optometrist advised against removing her cataracts because she was young. “He wasn't interested in taking them out, which made me very unhappy, especially since I noticed my tennis game was slipping.”

She began searching for a remedy. Not taking “no” for an answer, Sarah consulted another optometrist, who gave her the opposite advice of the first eye doctor: to remove the cataracts immediately.

Sarah was referred to ophthalmologist Dr. Kerry Assil, one of the country's foremost experts in cataract surgery and improving near and far vision (distance vision) with lens implants. She quickly made an appointment to undergo eye testing with the ophthalmologist she now calls “the master."

Dr. Assil to the rescue

“My vision was terrible by that point. I had to wear my eyeglasses constantly,” says Sarah, who had been wearing specs for 20 years. “I could only drive during the day. At night, I would ride-share or be stuck wherever I was, which was not fun.”

After running a litany of sophisticated ‌eye exams, Dr. Assil agreed with Sarah's referring optometrist and told her that cataract surgery with an intraocular lens (IOL implant) would be the most appropriate course of action to restore and correct her vision. Cataract surgery is the eye procedure that removes the cataract damaged lens (which clouds your eye's natural lens) and then replaces it with a vision-correcting clear lens (IOL), which is called “premium lens cataract surgery.”

Dr. Assil, one of the country's leading-edge ophthalmologists, uses 3D technology on a large “heads-up display” during surgery to remove cataracts completely. His high-speed laser breaks up the cataracts, and Dr. Assil's perfectionist surgical disposition results in 100% complete cataract removal.

Believe it or not, this is not the case with all cataract surgeons who often only remove the visible cataract, though frequently there is more cataract hiding in other parts of the eye that can later shift and block vision!

At the Assil Gaur Eye Institute, there are a dozen lens replacement options. Sarah was eager to learn what type of IOL lens was best for her. Dr. Assil was sure that the answer was the new state-of-the-art Odyssey lens by Johnson & Johnson.

“Sarah wanted exceptional vision at different distances with a minimum degree of halos at night and did not want to wear reading glasses,” Dr. Assil explained. “So, based on numerous personal ocular criteria, including her pupil size and shape, the Odyssey lens was, fortunately for Sarah, the best choice.”

“The Odyssey lens is the closest we have ever been to LASIK laser vision correction for patients who are not good candidates for LASIK or other laser vision correction protocols,” Dr. Assil continued.

Says Sarah, “I trusted Dr. Assil's opinion, and I'm glad I did.”

What is the Odyssey lens?

Before the FDA-approved Odyssey multifocal lens became available, doctors corrected cataract patients' refractive errors by implanting lenses that were limited in their power to fully correct a patient's vision. For example:

  • A monofocal lens allows for very sharp focus for just one vision criterion (near, far, or intermediate vision).
  • With traditional multifocal IOLs or ‌extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses, patients could have a pretty good range of vision (both near and far), though patients usually needed to wear glasses for reading.
  • In some cases, one eye was fitted with a near-sighted corrective lens, and the other was fitted with a far-sighted corrective lens.

Now, with the Odyssey premium IOL, the Assil Gaur surgeons can achieve exceptional visual acuity at multiple focal points in both eyes, just like the natural lenses when our eyes are young. The Odyssey IOL can even correct astigmatism.

A very successful premium cataract surgery for Sarah

“I was incredibly nervous, but it turned out to be super easy,” says Sarah, recalling the 20-minute surgical procedure. “I was good to go immediately after surgery. It was super, super fast.”

As Sarah learned during her follow-up appointment the next day, her quality of vision was better than ever—would you believe 20/15? That means Sarah can now see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 15 feet. Having 20/15 clear vision benefits all activities requiring sharp vision, such as reading fine print, driving, and numerous sports, to name just a few.

With Sarah's tennis game back in the groove, she's now looking forward to skiing without contacts or glasses, as skiing is another of her true passions.

Having achieved spectacle independence, Sarah gleefully described the results of her intraocular lens implant by saying, “I see like a hawk now.”
